Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Minister of Education and Culture and Árni M. Mathiesen, Minister of Finance signed an agreement with the Icelandic Filmmaker‘s Association to strengthen the Icelandic film industry during the next four years. The agreement calls for a support to Icelandic film making from 372 million kronur this year to 700 million kronur in the year 2010.

With the agreement the aim is to make four full length Icelandic films a year and the production grant from Kvikmyndasjóður should be 50% instead of 40% today. Special emphasis should be made for children and family films and special support for short films and documentaries will continue.

Minister Gunnarsdóttir was very pleased with the agreement and said that this day was a milestone in Icelandic film making. „The future is bright and we are taking big steps forward,“ she said. Film director Baltasar Kormákur spoke on behalf of film makers and said this agreement was a breakthrough in Icelandic film making.
