Reykjavík mayor Vilhjálmur Þ. Vilhjálmsson signed an agreement yesterday with the German company Bauhaus, giving them permission to build a home improvement store in east Reykjavík. The move comes in the wake of controversy over the deal, as Icelandic home improvement store BYKO has said they were unfairly shut out of being able to buy the lot that Bauhaus will build on. Vilhjálmsson responded by saying that Bauhaus offers a good product and will serve to increase competition between companies in the field in Iceland. The store that Bauhaus is planning to build will be 20,000 square metres, the largest of its kind in the country. - pfn
